Starting November 28, 2021

We hope these daily reflections and prayers throughout Advent and for Christmas Day will bring you great calmness and peace as we prepare for the celebration of God’s Word made flesh continuously in our midst. As we walk these days together, may the spirit of St. Francis bring us and our world to a greater peace and our lives closer to God.

Christmas Day

DEC

25

Pray Today
Jesus, it’s Christmas. I make my long practiced way to the crèche and see again, as if for the first time, the motley assortment of characters. Mary and Joseph are quiet, exhausted, excited, somewhat bewildered. I take in the scene: love spilling over. The love that is God takes me in. Glory to God in the highest and within my heart. Thank You, Jesus.

Today Pray For peace in the world.

Conclude your prayer with:
Lord, by Your Incarnation You became like us. Open our hearts and minds that we may become like You: gentle, loving, merciful, prayerful and just. You are forever, Emmanuel, God with us.

FRIDAY

DEC

Today’s Intention
For artists, writers and performers who cause us to see what is true, good and beautiful.

Conclude your prayer with:
Lord, by Your Incarnation You became like us. Open our hearts and minds that we may become like You: gentle, loving, merciful, prayerful and just. You are forever, Emmanuel, God with us.

THURSDAY

DEC

Pray Today

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, let me feel the warmth of God’s presence. In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, let me recognize new life around me. In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, let me see the love around me. In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, let me hear the voice of love.

Today’s Intention

For those experiencing loneliness, pain, illness and loss during the Advent Season.

Conclude your prayer with:
Lord, by Your Incarnation You became like us. Open our hearts and minds that we may become like You: gentle, loving, merciful, prayerful and just. You are forever, Emmanuel, God with us.

There are, of course, still seasonal bell-ringers and carolers, piped-in music, church concerts and sermons, but in this quiet moment of prayer, as a lover would speak to the beloved, You whisper, “I AM…Who do you say I am?” You, I say, are the One who formed and reforms me. Make me ready to spread Your good news, for You are the God who saves.

Today’s Intention
For all Franciscans, especially those ministering in the Holy Land

Sometimes, God, I seem to live by to-do lists, a useful aid in keeping a busy schedule. I also keep an unwritten list of spiritual to-do’s. With only a few days of Advent remaining, I am short on accomplishments, embarrassed and disappointed. Then again, Lord, salvation is Your gift, not my doing, and so, like Mary, I pray, “Be it done to me, according to Your will.” May all my doings be a faithful response to Your love.

Today’s Intention
For those who are lonely or depressed this season.

By all human standards, Your generosity is foolish. I want to be noticed when I do good, excused when I make mistakes or do wrong. For those who will die today and for the comfort of those who mourn them.

Lord, by Your Incarnation You became like us. Open our hearts and minds that we may become like You: gentle, loving, merciful, prayerful and just. You are forever, Emmanuel, God with us.

Jesus, Christmas cards and Carols celebrate childhood and innocence. As I examine my conscience today, I am keenly aware of my failings. How easy it is for me to become self-centered, to let good deeds go undone, to promote myself at the expense of others and to let long-standing prejudices go unexamined and uncorrected. Remind me that You offer forgiveness to those who repent , that in Your mercy, You remove guilt and shame.

Today’s Intention

Amazing God, Messiah, how often I have seen Your face and failed to recognize You! As I go about my business this weekend, help me to acknowledge Your presence: in the kindness of strangers and friends, in the homeless woman I pass every day, in the father playing peek-a-boo with his toddler.

Pray Today
Jesus, Christmas cards and Carols celebrate childhood and innocence. As I examine my conscience today, I am keenly aware of my failings. How easy it is for me to become self-centered, to let good deeds go undone, to promote myself at the expense of others and to let long-standing prejudices go unexamined and uncorrected. Remind me that You offer forgiveness to those who repent , that in Your mercy, You remove guilt and shame.

Today’s Intention
For confessors and penitents.

Conclude your prayer with:
Lord, by Your Incarnation You became like us. Open our hearts and minds that we may become like You: gentle, loving, merciful, prayerful and just. You are forever, Emmanuel, God with us.

Daily Scripture Reflection
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves. The Lord redeems the lives of His servants; no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in Him.” –Psalm 34:19,23

Jesus, Good Shepherd, I rejoice in Your tender mercy, but I am at times a reluctant lamb. Trusting myself to Your care means recognizing my dependence, neediness and lack of power. Jesus, it is only the first day of Advent, but it already looks like Christmas. Decorated trees, Santas and blinking lights abound. Ads invite me to create wish lists.
